Kingston Fall Fair
by Festival Nomad, Gary McWilliams
Every year the Kingston and District Agricultural Society host the Kingston Fall Fair. Judi and I love to visit Kingston, so a trip to the Kingston Fall Fair was in order. We left Cobourg on a sunny, but crisp Saturday morning and headed east towards Kingston. We arrived at our destination in good time and found the main entrance to the fair. We were fortunate to find a close-by parking space.
As we walked from the entrance through the fair grounds, we came to a lawn tractor race in progress. These loud, brightly coloured supped-up tractors were racing wildly around an oval dirt track! The crowd watching and the drivers were all having great fun! From the race we entered the Memorial Centre where the community agricultural displays were housed. We journeyed through the Centre admiring the exhibits. From the Centre we walked to and through the cattle barn and on to the show ring. A class of young competitors and their charges were being judged. We watched several classes being judged and then moved on to another barn that contained a variety of farm animals, a mini pony, goats, pigs, chickens and ducks. From this barn we passed more judging, this time of goats. Everywhere we looked in the barn area, participants were munching contentedly on “Kentucky Fried Chicken” box lunches. From the barn area we walked back towards the Memorial Centre. Outside the centre several riders were preparing for an upcoming horse show. Inside the building people were finding seats to watch one of the show events. We joined the crown and found seats of our own. After a short wait competitors entered the arena and started circling the show ring. At first they just trotted about the ring and then they started practicing going over some of the lower jumps. Finally the riders where told that the event was about to start. Each rider lined up and took their turn. The beauty of the horse and riders moving in one motion was inspiring! We stayed to watch for some time and then went back outside. We had visited the whole fair and it was now time to head home from the Kingston Fall Fair. Another Fall Fair explored and enjoyed!
