NEB'S Fun World

" The following is an article written after our visit to the NEB's Fun World in Oshawa. To truly appreciate NEB'S, you need to visit it in person. Have fun!"

The Birthday Party…
It was a cold rainy Sunday afternoon and a great day for a kid’s indoor birthday party!
Our friends, Ross and Cathy’s daughter was celebrating her 5th birthday and we were invited! The party was being held at NEB’s Fun World in Oshawa. Ross said that NEB’s was a really great Ontario attraction and suggested that I come early and bring my camera. He thought that Fun World would make an excellent addition to our Ontario Festivals Visited website. After studying the NEB’s website, I agreed. The Funworld offered everything that a kid (big or small) would want for a birthday party, bowling, Go-Karts, rock climbing wall, bumper cars, inflatables, scary rides and more. Entering NEB’s was quite the experience! The sound of bowling balls rolling down wooden lanes, people talking and laughing and music thumping though loud speakers, all mix together in one harmonious roar. There were adults and kids everywhere, all walking or running in different directions! The bowling area was very crowded and very large. It was going to be difficult to find our friends! We started to look for them by walking from one end of the bowling area to the other but couldn’t find them. Finally I tried calling them on their cell phone and Ross answered. He told us that they in the Go-Kart area waiting for their turn to race. He gave directions and hung up. It was now up to us to follow the directions. You might think that this would be a simple task, but NEB’S Fun World is huge and has a number of separate rooms for its different activities. It was like being in a maze, but there was no string to follow! The birthday party would have to wait a little longer…

Go-Karting and More…
We wound our way through the maze of hallways and rooms until we finally found the “NEB’S Fun World Speedway” and our birthday party. Ross, with his granddaughter in his arms, met us at the top of the metal bridge that span the race track. You could see the Go-Karts racing by underneath. Beside us was a caged area with “Air Cannons”. The attraction was “Air Tag” where the stated “object of this game is to shoot foam balls at each other with air cannons, hitting targets and accumulating points”. The cage was just filling when we arrived and the game was about to start. The birthday party was waiting for their turn to go Go-Karting and race around the “Speedway" track. Judi and I decided to get off the bridge and go to the speedway viewing area. Finally our wait was rewarded. It was the birthday party’s turn to race. Everyone climbed into their respective Karts and drove the starting line. The engines revved (kind of), the start lights flashed and the race was on! I am not sure how fast they were going or how many times they raced around the track, but judging by the smiles and laughter, everyone was having a great time! It was over all too soon! The participants came back over the bridge and met us in the waiting area. It was now time to try out some of the other activities. We looked at the scary rides, but the children were too small. The “Family Himalayas” and the “Skylight Screamer” would have to wait for another few years, as would the “Rock Climbing Wall”. The inflatable “Jumping Castles”, however, were just right! All the kids and their parents crowded into the inflatables enclosure. The attendant on duty told everyone the rules of the attraction and then they were off, sliding, jumping and climbing. The kids loved it and had great fun. Finally, exhausted (the parents!) their time was up! We all left the “NEB’S Fun World Speedway” and headed back through the maze. It was time to go “Bowling, NEB's Fun World style ”…

Let’s Go Bowling…
We walked back from the “Speedway” to the bowling area. NEB’S Fun World has 52 lanes of 5-pin bowling and 12 lanes of 10-pin. 32 of the 5-pin lanes offer “bumper” bowing. The bumpers make sure that wayward bowling balls can’t slip into the gutters! (Why didn’t they have these when I was a kid?) The bumpers run from the front of the lane (both sides), all the way back to just before the strike zone. It’s perfect for little tykes who are just starting out and can hardly hold the ball let alone roll it properly. It’s also great for over enthusiastic grandfathers (NOT ME!) who are eager to impress children at birthday parties! The teams were all set and the bowling started! While the kids (and adults) bowled, I decided to wander around and discover NEB’S Fun World other attractions. The first attraction I discovered were the “Bumper Cars” Even though they were located in a smaller room, drivers still seemed to be able to give other driver a hard bump! Next to the “Bumper Cars” was the “Adventure Zone”. This room was full of all kinds of arcade games. The room was alive with colours and music. There were so many types of games to play. It would be difficult to choose which one to play first! On route to the next room, I passed the “check-in” counter and, on the other side of the entrance hall, a small “food” counter. Beyond these counters was the “Pinball Lounge”. This is a huge “Pirate” theme room that is available for “parties, banquets and special occasions”. Today the room was just being used by NEB’s customers. The room featured dartboards, driving simulators, pool tables, TV’s and, my favourite, karaoke. A girl was singing to some country song when I went in. As tempting as it was for me to step up to the microphone, I decided against is as I didn’t want to clear the room! Instead, I quietly backed out of the room and went back to watch the kids bowling. It was hard to tell which team was winning! The fathers had occasionally jumped for a shot or four and skewed the scores. I am not sure whether it was to the kids favour or detriment! Actually, no one really cared who won, they were just having fun, laughing and playing at NEB’s Fun World!
